Bossier City Native Jared Leto Wins an Oscar

Jared Leto has won an Oscar for his performance in "Dallas Buyers Club."

Leto, who portrayed a transexual in the film, took home the Oscar for Best Supporting Actor. The actor previously won a Golden Globe for the performance.

The Bossier-born actor also provided locals watching the Oscars a pleasant bit of hometown pride when he mentioned Shreveport-Bossier in his acceptance speech. Leto brought his mother with him to the awards show, thanking her for inspiring him.

"In 1971, Bossier City, Louisiana, there was a teenage girl who was pregnant with her second child. She was a high school dropout and a single mom, but somehow she managed to make a better life for herself and her children," Leto said. "She encouraged her kids to be creative, to work hard and to do something special. That girl is my mother, and she's here tonight. I love you mom, and thank you for teaching me to dream."

Leto beat out Jonah Hill, Barkhad Abdi, Michael Fassbender and Bradley Cooper to win the award.
