Farmers’ Markets Open Everywhere

Farmers all across Louisiana and Texas are  loading their pickups and getting ready to sell to eager customers this weekend.

The Famer's Market in downtown Shreveport is located at 101 Crocket Street (Pavilion at Festival Plaza). It's open Saturdays from 7 am until noon through September 3rd and Tuesdays from 3 to 6 pm through July 19th.

In East Texas,  the Rusk County Farmers Market starts at 7 a.m. on Saturday s and lasts until everything is sold out. It also opens at 3 p.m. on Tuesdays and lasts until 7 p.m.

Located next to the Henderson Activity Center parking lot on Fair Park and South High streets, the market features locally-grown produce like tomatoes, peas, beans, peppers, corn, potatoes, squash, zucchini, and cucumbers as well as berries, figs, watermelons, cantaloupes, herbs, potted plants and flowers.

Overton is also getting into the swing of things with its own farmers market officially launching this weekend.

“We’ve had about 4 or 5 vendors selling produce, herbs and flowers each Saturday, and they’ve been selling out quickly,” said Jeannie Barber, secretary for the Overton-New London Area Chamber of Commerce. “I think this weekend’s launch is going to go really well, we hope so anyway.”

Farmers from throughout Rusk County will be in attendance, including Henderson native Jessie Barker.

“I’ve got a mess of potatoes and peppers I’m going to be bringing,” she said. “I brought cabbage and tomatoes last week and they didn’t last more than a couple hours.”

The farmers market is scheduled to run from 8 a.m. to noon each Saturday but event organizer Robert Loftice said there’s flexibility.

“We’re glad to accommodate anyone’s schedule,” he added.

The market is located at the town square, at 130 E. Henderson Street in downtown Overton.
