The following post contains SPOILERS — both real and fake ones that were shared online — for Rogue One.

The subtitle for Rogue One, at least in the film’s trailers and posters (though not onscreen in the actual movie), is “A Star Wars Story.” Many more stories were written about Rogue One online during its development and production, and a fair number of them were true. The Daily Mail was absolutely right, for example, about the late Peter Cushing making a CGI-aided return to the screen as his old Star Wars character, Grand Moff Tarkin. But some stories, alas, were not quite so accurate.

Overall, there weren’t as many false rumors about Rogue One as there were about Star Wars: The Force AwakensMaybe that’s because people were more excited for Force Awakens (and the return of characters like Luke Skywalker and Han Solo) than they are for Rogue One. Maybe this new cycle of constant new Star Wars movies diminishes the anticipation that greeted TFA, the first Star Wars in many years with the original cast. Maybe the fact that Rogue One is a prequel hemmed in some of the guesses. You could speculate that Luke Skywalker is going to show up, but since the movie is set before his introduction to the Rebellion in A New Hope, that doesn’t make a whole lot of sense. (Of course, some people did that anyway.)

Even with all that said, there were still more than enough false rumors to fill out this list, a tradition we inaugurated with The Force Awakens last year. Please note that no Bothans died to bring us this information (because that line is from Return of the Jedi, not A New Hope, and it refers to the second Death Star, not the first).
