Eight people were hospitalized following a shooting early this morning in west Shreveport.

Just after 2:30AM, patrol officers were called to a report of a shooting in the 3500 block of Hearne Avenue. One of the victims, identified as 19-year-old Nicholas Jiles, was found in the parking lot of a service station in the 3700 block of Hearne. He'd suffered a gunshot wound to the leg and a graze wound to the back.

Jiles was taken to University Health for treatment and is expected to recover. Shortly afterward, police found out the remaining seven victims, including a 16-year-old girl, had been taken by private vehicles to Willis-Knighton North and University Health. An assessment of their conditions indicated a variety of wounds, from minor to potentially life-threatening.

Information gathered during the preliminary investigation suggests two groups of people were loitering on adjacent parking lots at the intersection of Hearne and Kings Highway. At some point, an exchange of gunfire between the two groups erupted.

Police say at this stage of the investigation, it's unclear the extent of involvement the shooting victims had in connection with the incident or what factors led to the exchange. Investigators have recovered a handgun along with dozens of spent shell casings.

A vehicle and a business were among property damaged as a result of the gunfire. No arrests have been made so far, but the investigation continues.

Anyone with information that can help is asked to call Crime Stoppers at 318-673-7373.
