Holy chimichangas, he’s back.

Ryan Reynolds shared the picture below on Instagram, commemorating the official start of production on Deadpool 2, the highly awaited sequel to last year’s surprise superhero hit. (I could have sworn he and co-writer Rhett Reese were all like “We’re back!” last week, but maybe that was just pre-production stuff or whatever.) You will note that Deadpool director Tim Miller’s name is absent from this slate; he’s been replaced on the sequel by John Wick director David Leitch, which is a damn fine substitute (and possibly an upgrade, at least in the action and gunplay department).

The sun sets on day 1. Feels good to be back. This dog can hunt.

Not for nothing, but it’s kind of awesome that Deadpool 2 is actually being shot on 35mm film. You can’t say that for many movies these days, and I am sure Wade Wilson’s hideously scarred face will look particularly disgusting through all that sweet film grain. I don’t know if any of us will ever get to actually see Deadpool 2 projected on film. But if it’s being shot that way, there’s a chance. (And, seriously, a character as grungy and nasty as Deadpool would look great on a busted, weathered old film print.)

Deadpool 2, with 100 percent more Josh Brolin Cable than the original, opens in theaters on June 1, 2018.
