A ‘Karate Kid’ Sequel Series Is Coming to YouTube

the karate kid

The legacyquel craze continues. The Hollywood Reporter says that a continuation of the ’80s franchise The Karate Kid is coming – to your phone or computer.

The series, which is called Cobra Kai, will resume the original story 30 years later (Want to feel old? The Karate Kid came out 30 years ago. Also he looks like this now.) Both of the film’s original teen stars, Ralph Macchio and William Zabka will return, playing the roles of Danny LaRusso and Johnny Lawrence. Via THR, here’s the full plot synopsis:

The series, set to bow in 2018, is set 30 years after the events of the 1984 All Valley Karate Tournament and revolves around a down and out Johnny who, seeking redemption, reopens the infamous Cobra Kai dojo. It reignites his rivalry with a now-successful Daniel, who has been struggling to maintain balance in his life without the guidance of his mentor, Mr. Miyagi (the late Pat Morita). The half-hour comedy follows the duo addressing demons from their past and present frustrations — through (what else?) karate.

Half-hour… comedy? I mean the scene where he honked the guy’s nose in Karate Kid Part II was pretty funny, but I don’t know about this.

After a “competitive situation” for the rights between numerous channels and streaming sites, Cobra Kai has landed at YouTube Red, the online video’s subscription service, which has been looking to bolster its roster of offerings. Gotta have a legacyquel if you want those sweet subscription dollars these days. Cobra Kai is set for 10 episodes and will premiere in 2018.
