It’s a historical day on the campus of C.E. Byrd High School as Field Turf is being installed on the field behind school, which will be used by the football, soccer and lacrosse teams as well as by physical education classes.

The synthetic turf field is part of a $1.5 million project dubbed "Jacket Pride: The Campaign for Byrd Athletics," that that will bring some of the school's athletic facilities into the 21st century. In addition to the synthetic turf field, Phase I will also include a synthetic surface track to replace the current asphalt track.

Due to the construction, the Yellow Jackets football team has practiced at Independence Stadium and Lee Hedges Stadium in preparations for Friday’s season opener at Zachary.
