When Marvel announced Ryan Coogler as the director of Black Panther, it seemed like only a matter of time before he cast his lucky charm: Creed and Fruitvale Station star Michael B. Jordan. That time has come, as Jordan has officially joined Chadwick Boseman in the Wakandan hero’s solo outing, which hits theaters in 2018.

Per THR, Jordan will reunite with his Creed director for Black Panther, and while details of the actor’s role are currently unknown, sources suggest that he may be playing the film’s villain — which would offer a delightful change of pace for the typically charming actor. As reported yesterday, Lupita Nyong’o remains in talks for a leading role opposite Boseman, reprising his role as T’Challa following his MCU debut in Captain America: Civil War.

Although plot details are unconfirmed, the film will presumably follow T’Challa as he transitions from Prince of Wakanda to King, following the murder of his father, T’Chaka.

Jordan is no stranger to superhero fare, having previously appeared in Chronicle and Fantastic Four. The actor is now the third member of the Creed movie family to join the MCU, with Tessa Thompson set to co-star in Thor: Ragnarok. There have also been rumors that Sylvester Stallone is making an appearance in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2.

Jordan’s upcoming projects include a remake of The Thomas Crown Affair (which he’ll star in and produce alongside Marvel’s Joe and Anthony Russo), and Just Mercy with Short Term 12 director Destin Cretton.

Black Panther hits theaters on February 2, 2018.
