Captain America: Civil War directors Joe and Anthony Russo previously sent the internet into a slight tizzy when they revealed that their epic two-part Avengers: Infinity War will have something like 67 characters. That would seem like a lot of superheroes, if you took the Russo brothers’ comments literally. And just in case you did, Infinity War scribes Christopher Markus and Stephen McFeely are here to assure you that’s not actually the case, but there is one character in particular who will be in the film — and he’ll have a much bigger role.

Since his introduction in the MCU, Thanos hasn’t really accomplished much — if anything, really. He’s tried and failed to have others do his bidding, but mostly the big purple space titan has sat on his throne barking orders and making empty threats. But as we inch closer to Infinity War (and as teased in the Age of Ultron stinger), that will no longer be the case. As McFeely tells Huffington Post, Thanos is one of their biggest priorities for the Avengers sequel:

[Thanos]. It’s easy. Really giving him good scenes. You know, he’s never been the villain in any of the movies. He’s never been the main character in that way, so giving lots of good screen time to Thanos is paramount and pretty fun….He hasn’t had an amazing scene. I think it’s an advantage ultimately, right? Because people are anticipating this guy coming in and really delivering the goods. So, I think they’re eager, and we just have to deliver it. We don’t have to convince them that he’s gonna be interesting. We just have to execute what has been teased.

Markus goes on to address the Russos’ comments regarding the number of characters in Infinity War, which, as we assumed, includes minor and supporting characters:

That number comes from the fact that that’s everyone who’s already been introduced. If you line up all the characters who are available to use from the prior Marvel movies, it racks up to about 60 something characters, let alone the new ones you could bring in.

Whether the film ultimately has 67 characters or 167 or just seven, we still have a bit of a journey ahead of us in the MCU before that gets sorted out. Avengers: Infinity War – Part 1 hits theaters on May 4, 2018, followed by Part 2 on May 3, 2019.

Captain America: Civil War arrives on May 6.
