The republican race for nominee for president of the United States just got a little more interesting. One candidate drops out, and another wins Iowa after losing at first.

Now it's no surprise to me that Texas Gov.  Rick Perry dropped out because he seemed to be struggling his whole candidacy.  For instance, the debate with Massachusetts Gov.  Mitt Romney,  in which Perry appeared rude, cutting off his opponent and interrupting him in mid-sentence.

If you're from Texas, that's just how it is. We're rude! Perry could have taken a few tips from former president George W. Bush on manners.

So,  Perry throws his support behind Newt Gingrich. Why? Newt is very intelligent with a great fiscal plan for the country (remember his "contract for America") but it seems he has ethical issues and lately another story has surfaced,  supposedly that  Newt's ex-wife says he wanted an "open marriage."

So much for family values.  Speaking of family values, faith, God and country, I like Sen. Rick Santorum.  I happened to hear some of his speeches and he sounded like the kind of candidate who wants to take America back to what the Founding Fathers wanted.  A strong country, with strong family values, strong faith in God and "a government of  the people, by the people and for the people."

And, apparently that rhetoric rang true for at least Iowa voters, because a re-count puts Santorum as the winner.  Romney, though,  has won New Hampshire,  so Santorum has a long way to go.

I like him, but I heard he voted for the failed economic stimulus plan.

Meanwhile, President O'Bama will no doubt win the democratic  nomination unopposed.  He can claim he got Osama Bin Laden.  But he sure can't claim he did anything else.

Here's to a long haul before the primaries and the actual presidential election.

And remember what happened last time.  Just when you thought you had it figured out, Sarah Palin shows up as  a  vice-presidential candidate.  I don't think that will happen this time, but you can bet there will be surprises! Stay tuned.
