Waffles are so popular around the world that there are two days set aside to celebrate them.  International Waffle Day happens on March 25th every year and began in Sweden.  The day traditionally marks the beginning of spring in that country and is celebrated by eating a ton of waffles, or Våfflor as they're called in Sweden.

National Waffle Day is today, and is observed in America every year on August 24th. The day doesn't celebrate the waffle so much as it does the waffle iron.  Back in 1869, American inventor Cornelius Swartwout received the first patent for a waffle iron.

What is humorous is that waffles were actually first created in ancient Greece, where they were called obelios.  Obelios were flat cakes cooked between two metal plates placed over an open fire.

Nowadays you can have waffles just about any way you want 'em.  You can have fat Belgian waffles or thin wafer waffles. You can fill them with fresh fruit or top them with fruit compote.  You can have them filled with pecans or bacon   Personally I prefer a wafer waffle simply topped with mounds of butter and dripping with maple syrup.

As a public service, I've compiled my 5 favorite places to get a waffle in Shreveport/Bossier.  Your list may vary, and we'd love to see it, so feel free to comment in the section below.

    Waffle House

Hands down, you will not find a better wafer waffle anywhere in the world.  Don't know how they do it, but WH's waffles are always crispy on the outside and moist on the inside.  Get the All-Star breakfast with it, and you'll soon find yourself in a pleasant food coma.

Strawn's is best know for their delectable pies, but they also make a mean waffle. Try it.  It's as big as your face.
