It’s been 19 days since Haughton High School head football coach Rodney Guin suffered a near-fatal heart attack.

On Wednesday, he took his first steps.

With his quick progress, Guin is expected to be moved to the rehab facility on Baylor’s campus.

Last week, Guin was removed from a ventilator and was able to breath on his own.

Says Guin's daughter Mallory, who keeps journals of her dad's recovery process:

At around 2:15 my phone rang and it was my mom. I was immediately awake and prepared for some type of news: good, bad, ugly? When I answered she was crying and laughing at the same time and said the best words I've heard in 13 days... they were "Mallory, if you want to see your dad awake you need to hurry! He knows us! He's awake!!"

When I walked in the room and he focused on me I uttered the words "Hey Dad!" In that moment when I realized he "got it", he started crying...tears of fear or joy or just pure emotion, I don't know. But I did realize, he knew us. He was there and he could hear us and see us and knew we needed to see him. God knows what we need and when we need it.

Guin’s story is considered that of a miracle. His odds of survival were one in 100. His hope now is to be back in Shreveport within a month.
